On Monday, March 5, NW Film Center will show ”Only a Buck,” a Spokane-made film from 1986 that the Oregonian called, “A clever comedy, well worth seeing.” The movie starts at 7:00 pm. Director Jerry Cook will be in attendance. Admission is free or pay-what-you-will.
Film description:
This Spokane-made first feature by Jerry Cook retains the charm and wit that made it a standout among regionally made films in the 1980s. The film depicts J. Jordan, a sort of ’80s Maynard G. Krebs/Rube Goldberg gadget-loving guy who quits his job as a bored and hassled local television news photographer to make a movie about a guy who quits his job to make a movie. Cook describes his film as “the TV dinner of movies … it didn’t cost a lot, but it’s still pretty good.” Technically assured and full of heart, laugh-out-loud ambience and humor, and off-the-wall hipness, Cook’s debut will warm the hearts of anyone who has made, or dreams of making, a movie. “A clever comedy, well worth seeing.”—Ted Mahar, The Oregonian. “The film’s delightful atmosphere wins you over.”—D.K. Friday, February 24
Shark Days: Watch the half-hour children’s film “The Shark Riddle,” named Best Children’s Program of the Year at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. Rockwood Library (17917 SE Stark St, Portland), 12:30 pm.
String Quartet No. 2 by Morton Feldman: Third Angle Ensemble will perform this four-hour piece. Come and go as you please, or stay for the whole thing. Ellyn Bye Studio Theater at Portland Center Stage (128 NW Eleventh Ave, Portland), 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Portland Art Museum Free Day: It’s the fourth Friday of the month, which means admission is free from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
“Portlandia” + “Actioke”: Doors open at 5:30 pm. Actioke begins 6:00 pm. The latest episode of “Portlandia” begins at 7:00 pm. Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan, Portland).
Cascade Festival of African Films runs through March 3.

Fix-It Fair: Free minor bike tune-ups and flat tire repair for students and families. Free workshops about saving money, home improvement, and more. Free childcare and lunch. Jefferson High School (5210 N. Kerby Ave, Portland), 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.
Boogie Woogie Concert for Tots: Nana Banana, aka Cinda Tilgner, will entertain kids with songs and music on the guitar, ukulele and harmonica. Rockwood Library (17917 SE Stark St, Portland), 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm.

William O. Crane’s Seven Concerts: Crane — along with other local musicians, dancers, and others — will perform seven free concerts over seven days. The first concert is today at 6:00 pm at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church (1535 NE 17th Ave, Portland). The series continues through March 2 at various locations.
Screening of “Inlaws & Outlaws”: Hosted by The Living Room, a safe haven for GLBTQQ youth in Clackamas County. The Ainsworth House (19130 Lot Whitcomb Dr, Oregon City), 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

Real Japan for Anime Fans: Learn how the real Japan ties into its pop culture (for instance, did you know the bathhouse of the gods from Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” is based on a real bathhouse?). For teens and adults. Capitol Hill Library (10723 SW Capitol Highway, Portland), 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
Kids Can Make Bread: Learn how to make bread and take home your own mini round of bread to bake. For ages 11 and up. Holgate Library (7905 SE Holgate Blvd, Portland), 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
“Girlchild” Release Party: Celebrate the release of Tupelo Hassman’s novel, “Girlchild,” with an evening of readings and music.
