Free Events in Portland: January 11–13, 2013

As the holidays wind down, the free events pick up. A nice assortment this weekend, including a birthday bash for one “precious” author.

Note: Admission is free for the following events, but you might be charged for activities or food and drink.

Events are sorted by start time.

Friday, January 11

Lan Su Chinese Garden: Celebrate the new year with free admission. 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Big Ass Boombox: A two-day pop music and literary festival featuring 40 bands and 15 writers.

“Portlandia” Season 3 Premiere: Showings at the Mission Theatre (7:00 pm and 10:00 pm) and Bagdad Theatre (10:00 pm).

Saturday, January 12

Lan Su Chinese Garden: Celebrate the new year with free admission. 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Guided Nature Walk at Tryon Creek State Natural Area: This week’s theme is “The Art of Owling.” 11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd, Portland, 10:00 am.

Washington County Museum Free Family Day: Learn how different cultures celebrate the new year. Games, crafts, and more. 120 E. Main Street, Hillsboro, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Gearing Up for Space: Learn about the environment of space and how a space suit functions. Sherwood Public Library, 10:30 am to 11:15 pm.

Annual J.R.R. Tolkien Birthday Bash (donation): Films all day beginning at 11:00 am, costume contest, and more. Kennedy School (5736 NE 33rd Ave, Portland). Free, with a donation for the Oregon Food Bank.

“And They’re Off . . .”: Penny’s Puppet Productions presents a show for kids about the animals of the Chinese calendar. Lake Oswego Library (706 Fourth St, Lake Oswego), 11:00 am to 11:45 am.

Snow Globes: Make a snow globe with artist Addie Boswell. Supplies provided. Personalize your globe by bringing a favorite tiny toy or treasure to hide inside. North Portland Library (512 N. Killingsworth St, Portland), 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Fresh Winter Salads: Join Portland Farmers Market for a cooking demonstration of hearty winter salads. Central Library (801 SW 10th Ave, Portland), 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.

William Stafford Birthday Celebrations in Milwaukie, West Linn, and Vancouver.

Sunday, January 13

Slavic New Year Celebration: Enjoy an afternoon of Russian plays and music. Gresham Library (385 NW Miller Ave, Gresham), 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

William Stafford Birthday Celebrations in Milwaukie, Portland, and Hillsboro.

The Winter Blues: A Guide to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Psychologists Jason Luoma and Brian Thompson will share the latest information about Seasonal Affective Disorder, including the available treatments and behavioral changes that can lessen its effects. Capitol Hill Library (10723 SW Capitol Highway, Portland), 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

“Gather at the Table: The Healing Journey of a Daughter of Slavery and a Son of the Slave Trade”: Thomas Norman DeWolf, a descendant of slaveholders, and Sharon Leslie Morgan, a descendant of slaves, openly discuss how slavery and racism has impacted their lives. Powell’s City of Books on Burnside, 7:30 pm.
