Free Events in Portland: January 4–6, 2013

Happy New Year!

One of this weekend’s highlights is free admission to the Lan Su Chinese Garden, starting on Saturday and running through January 12. A great start to 2013.

Note: Admission is free for the following events, but you might be charged for activities or food and drink.

Events are sorted by start time.

Friday, January 4

Portland Children’s Museum: It’s the first Friday of the month, which means admission is free from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.

Camas First Friday: This month’s theme is Game, Craft and Cocoa Night. Downtown Camas, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

“Portlandia” Season 3 Premiere: Showings at the Mission Theatre (7:00 pm and 10:00 pm) and Bagdad Theatre (10:00 pm).

“The Mighty Gastropolis: Portland: A Journey through the Center of America’s Food Revolution”: Author Karen Brooks will talk about her new book, which takes you inside the kitchens, lives, and recipes of Portland’s celebrated cooks. Powell’s City of Books on Burnside, 7:30 pm.

Saturday, January 5

Lan Su Chinese Garden: Celebrate the new year with free admission. 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

“And They’re Off . . .”: Penny’s Puppet Productions presents a show for kids about the animals of the Chinese calendar. Central Library (801 SW 10th Ave, Portland), 10:30 am to 11:15 am.

“Papagayo”: Tears of Joy Theatre presents an  interactive, bilingual performance for kids about Papagayo the parrot. Northwest Library (2300 NW Thurman St, Portland), 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

Sunday, January 6

Lan Su Chinese Garden: Free admission continues through January 12. 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Documentary Film: “Sharkwater”: This film follows renegade conservationist Paul Watson in his efforts to prevent an imminent mass extinction of sharks. Hollywood Library (4040 NE Tillamook St, Portland), 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

William Stafford Birthday Celebration: Enjoy readings by local poets and share your favorite Stafford poem. Beaverton City Library (12375 SW 5th St, Beaverton), 2:00 pm.

Grow Your Garden from Seed: Melissa Richmond, aka the Garden Lady, offers valuable tips for planning next season’s harvest. Woodstock Library (6008 S.E. 49th Ave, Portland), 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm.

Ursula K. Le Guin will talk about “The Unreal and the Real,” a two-volume selection of her best short stories. Powell’s City of Books on Burnside, 7:30 pm.
