This month

Lights on Peacock Lane: Residents of this SE Portland street have been decorating their homes for nearly a century. See what they’ve come up with this year. Every evening from December 15–31.

Christmas Ship Parade: This parade of boats, each one decorated with holiday lights, sets sail almost every evening through December 21 on the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Milwaukie is having a special event on Saturday: read about it here.

All weekend

Sacred Tibetan Art, The Sand Mandala Project: Watch six monks from the Drepung Loseling Phukhang Khangsten in South India construct a Tibetan sand mandala. On Sunday, they will destroy the mandala, amidst music, chanting, and prayer. Some sand will be available to audience members. The remaining sand will be carried in a procession to the Willamette River (weather permitting). Central Library (801 SW 10th Ave, Portland).

“Princess and the Pea” Performance (reserve tickets): Each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through December 23, see a live performance of “Princess and the Pea” at Theater!Theatre! (3430 SE Belmont, Portland). Go to the event website for information about reserving free tickets.

Friday, December 14

Write Around Portland 40th Book Release & Public Reading: This anthology includes writing by adults with disabilities, sexual assault survivors, low-income housing residents, burn survivors, teen parents, and others. Donations are accepted. Collins Hall at the back of the First United Methodist Church (1838 SW Jefferson St, Portland), 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Saturday, December 15

Guided Nature Walk at Tryon Creek State Natural Area: This week’s theme is Woodpeckers. 11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd, Portland, 10:00 am.

Oregon Historical Society Free Day: KGW meteorologist Rod Hill, a model train exhibit, carolers, journal making, and more. Check the event website for schedule information. 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Oregon Maritime Museum Free Day: Families enjoy free admission to the main exhibit space on the third Saturday of each month. 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Newbery Award-winning author Jennifer Holm will present her latest book at A Children’s Place Bookstore (4807 NE Fremont St, Portland) at 2:00 pm.

“Tales of Two Tricksters”: Penny’s Puppet Productions  presents the adventures of Raven and Coyote, two very sneaky tricksters. Central Library (801 SW 10th Ave, Portland), 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm.

Holiday Bike Rides: Check the event website for details on the caroling ride and the Peacock Lane ride.

Sunday, December 16

Posada Milagro: Performances of an original pastorela, live music, arts and crafts, storytelling, and more. Admission to the event is free, but performances are limited to ticket-holders only. Free tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the theatre beginning at 1:00 pm. El Centro Milagro (537 SE Stark St, Portland).

Decorative Wrapping Paper: Make your own wrapping paper, decorative gift bags, and cards to take home.  All materials provided. Capitol Hill Library (10723 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland),  2:00 pm to 3:30 pm.
