Free Events in Portland: January 21–23

Among the events this week: “Portlandia,” Portland staircases, Portland streetcars, and Portland authors. Admission is free. Enjoy!
Friday, January 21
“Portlandia” Screenings: Watch “Portlandia” in the company of other Portlandians at these locations:
- Mission Theater. The Morals will also perform. Doors open at 8:30 pm; screening starts at 10:30 pm. Ages 21+.
- Spirit of ‘77 at 10:30 pm.
Hula Lesson: Instructor Lisa Chang will share the history of hula and teach basic hula steps and Hawaiian terms. Tigard Library, 7:00 pm.
“The Imperfectionists”: Author Tom Rachman will talk about his acclaimed debut novel. Powell’s City of Books on Burnside, 7:30 pm.
“Portland’s Streetcar Lines”: Author Richard Thompson will talk about the history of Portland’s streetcars. Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills Crossing, 7:00 pm.
Saturday, January 22
Fix-It Fair: Workshops about saving money, health, and energy-saving home improvement. Free bike repair. Free lunch. Free childcare. Parkrose High School, 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.
Children’s book authors Susan Blackaby and Heather Vogel Frederick will talk about their books at Children’s Place Bookstore at 11:00 am. After the reading, enjoy edible treats at Eclectic Kitchen.
William Stafford Celebration: Stafford’s poetry will be celebrated with readings and a screening of “Every War Has Two Losers,” a documentary based on Stafford’s journals. Tigard Library, 2:00 pm.
Good ¢ents Series (requires registration): Operation HOPE and Financial Beginnings present a workshop about insurance at Tigard Library at 2:00 pm. Register by calling 503-718-2517.
Sunday, January 23
Fabric and Sewing Supplies Swap: Bring up to two grocery sacks of clean, usable sewing items you would like to give away such as fabric, thread, scissors and such. Take home an equivalent amount of new (to you) sewing items. Troutdale Library, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
“The Portland Stairs Book: Walks, Views, Stories”: Portland’s walking expert Laura Foster shares with you the best and most interesting staircases in Portland. Hollywood Library, 2:00 pm.
“I Felt Awesome: Tips and Tricks for 35+ Needle-Poked Projects”: This book shows you how to turn traditional needle-felting techniques into irreverent felted fun. Powell’s City of Books on Burnside, 2:00 pm.
