Free Events in Portland: October 29–31

I love it when Halloween falls on a weekend. This week’s roundup is all about Halloween (with a couple Day of the Dead events thrown in). Have fun out there!

Davis Graveyard: The haunting continues through early November. 8703 SE 43rd Ave in Milwaukie.

Halloween on Mississippi Avenue: Free candy, pizza, movies, and more.

Day of the Dead Altar Exhibit: Through November 14, Miracle Theatre Group will display an exhibit of ofrendas (altars) created by local Latino artists in celebration of Día de los muertos (Day of the Dead). The exhibit is open to the public one hour prior to each performance of ¡Viva Don Juan!, as well as between noon and 2:00 pm on October 26, 27, and 28, and November 4, 9, 10, and 11.

Friday, October 29

Blood and Guts Bash: Costume contests, door prizes, “The Vampire Diaries,” and anime. Bagdad Theater & Pub. Doors open at 9:00 pm. Ages 21+.

Saturday, October 30

Healthy Halloween on NW 23rd: Healthy treats, games, face painting, and sweet deals at participating merchants along NW 23rd all day.

Fall Family Festival at Clackamas Town Center: Kids are invited to come in costume with their parents and enjoy make-and-take crafts, face painting, and more from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Stores will be passing out candy from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Sunday, October 31

Halloween Party at Kennedy School: Free activities include trick-or-treating (4:30 pm to 6:30 pm) and Willamette Radio Workshop performing “Vincent Price’s ‘Theater of Blood’” (4:00 pm and 6:00 pm).

Halloween at Bagdad Theater: Costume contest and showing of “The Walking Dead.” Doors open at 8:00 pm; film starts at 10:00 pm. Ages 21+.

Trick-or-Treating at Pix: Dress up in costume and head to Pix for a free treat after 5:00 pm.

Westmoreland Monster March: This annual neighborhood parade will begin at 3:00 pm at Llewellyn School, head down SE Miwaukie to SE Bybee and back to Llewellyn.

Trick-or-Treat in Multnomah Village: Pick up a walking map at Starbucks; parents get a complimentary cup of coffee. Costume contest for parents. Have your photo taken for a donation. 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Dia de los Muertos Celebration: Head to Someday Lounge to build altars, decorate sugar skulls, watch videos, and more. 10:00 am.

Streets of Treats: Head to Bridgeport Village for games, music, and prizes from Radio Disney as well as treats from participating stores. 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Lake Oswego Harvest Fest: Kids can show off their costumes and enjoy games, activities, and a puppet production. Millennium Plaza Park, 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Gresham Safe Trick-or-Treat: Shops in Historic Downtown Gresham will be giving out Halloween treats. 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Saturday, October 23

West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta: Watch people paddle across the lake in giant, hollow-out pumpkins. Plus live music, costume contest, a bevy of other giant vegetables on display, and more. Lake of the Tualatin Commons, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Races start at 2:00 pm.

Live “Thriller” Performance: Watch a mass performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” at Pioneer Courthouse Square at 4:00 pm. There’s a $5 donation if you wish to dance; free for spectators. There will be a family-friendly bike ride that leads to this performance; read about the ride here.

Zombie Walk: Be a part of this ghoulish parade, or observe and hope they won’t notice you. The event begins after the “Thriller” performance at 4:00 pm.

Farmington Gardens Halloween Family Festival: Enjoy games, a maze, a scavenger hunt, and more. Costumes are encouraged, and pets are welcomed as well. 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Community Action Energy Fair: Workshops on energy, safety, and health topics. Kids activities. Free hot dog lunch. Lincoln Street Elementary School, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.

Lincoln Peirce, author and illustrator of the bestselling series “Big Nate,” will speak at Borders at Bridgeport Village, 2:00 pm. Best for ages 8-12.

Sunday, October 24

Wonder Woman Day: The event includes local and national artists signing comics and sketching, silent auction, costumed superheroes and science fiction characters, and more. Excalibur Comics, noon to 6:00 pm.

Day of the Dead Traditions and Crafts: Learn about the symbolism of a Day of the Dead altar, and decorate skeletons to adorn it. Troutdale Library, 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Celebration of Paulann Petersen, Oregon’s newest poet laureate: Guest speakers, a Flash Choir performance, and a special reading by Paulann Petersen. Reception will follow. Central Library, 2:00 pm.

Family Resource Fair at Beaverton Library: This annual event features family-friendly community organizations, books and activities for kids, and raffle prizes donated by Beaverton businesses. 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Screening of the film “Papers”: Produced by Portland-based film company Graham Street Productions, “Papers” follows the personal stories of five undocumented students and the national grassroots movement working to pass the DREAM Act. Central Library, 1:00 pm.

Author and chef Kim Boyce: In “Good to the Grain,” Boyce shows that whole-grain baking can be easy, healthy, and tasty. Pastaworks, 1:00 pm.

“Salted”: Mark Bitterman (proprietor of Portland salt store The Meadow) captures the nuance and beauty of salt in a stunning and authoritative field guide, which features hundreds of artisan varieties, 55 recipes, and more. Pastaworks, 3:00 pm.

“Dewey’s Nine Lives”: Author Vicki Myron presents the follow-up to her New York Times-bestselling book “Dewey.” Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills Crossing, 2:00 pm.

Re-Building South Portland: The Architectural Heritage Center reflects on the history of South Portland in a new exhibit and lecture. 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Free Admission to the Museum of Contemporary Craft: In honor of the 35th anniversary of Blue Sky, the Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts, admission is free all day.

Free Family Day at the Washington County Museum: Arts, crafts, and activities related to history, culture, and the spirit of the changing seasons. 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

“Much Adoe About Nothing”: The Ops Fest (Original Practice Shakespeare Festival) will perform this play as people did in Shakespeare’s time, which means limited rehearsal; an onstage prompter; fast-paced, energetic acting; and lots of audience interaction. Director Park, 2:00 pm.

Sunday, October 10

Lake Oswego Time Capsule Ceremony: Celebrate Lake Oswego’s centennial year with cake, live entertainment, and other fanfare. A group photo of all guests will be taken and placed in a time capsule. Millennium Plaza Park, 1:00 pm.

International Celebration Day: Head to Tigard Library for samba, Persian, and Andean music. 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
