Portland Art Museum Offers Discount Admission to College Students

Portland Art MuseumIf you’re a college student who is planning to visit the Portland Art Museum more than once over the next year, add the museum’s College Student Pass to your back-to-school shopping list.

The pass costs $10 and grants you admission to the museum for one year (September 1, 2008 through August 31, 2009). Since the price of a single student admission ticket is $9, the pass more than pays for itself after two visits.

Starting September 1 through the end of the school year, the pass will be on sale at the museum box office. You can buy the pass no matter which college or university you attend, as long as you have a current student ID card. To use the pass, you’ll also need to show your student ID.

Special exhibits may require an additional fee. But even with that, the pass is a great deal.

Note: If you’re younger than 18, forget you just read this post. Everyone under 18 gets in to the museum for free.

For more information, call the museum at 503-226-2811 or visit portlandartmuseum.org.

Throughout the week, the dancers will go about their daily routine of classes and rehearsals for all to observe. OBT will also offer free drop-in classes for children and adults. (There’s no pre-registration, so get there early to secure your spot.)

Some days will end with a performance:

  • Wednesday: “White Swan pas de deux” from Christopher Stowell’s “Swan Lake.”
  • Thursday: Performance with the Oregon Symphony at Waterfront Park (part of Portland Riverfest).
  • Saturday: “Heartbreaks ‘n’ Hotcakes,” a performance choreographed by Principal Dancer Anne Mueller to the music of Patsy Cline.

Friday will end with a showing of the movie “Billy Elliot.”

  • Parade of Willamette Species: Right now, you can register to participate in the Parade of Willamette Species, which takes place on August 30. To prepare for the parade, create a river species-inspired costume on your own or get help at the free puppet-making workshop on August 25 or the mask-making workshop on August 27. If marching is not your thing, come out on August 30 to see and cheer on what will surely be a creative menagerie. For more information, click here.

  • Symphony Concert: Come down to Tom McCall Waterfront Park on August 28 to watch performances by the Portland Youth Philharmonic and the Oregon Symphony. Be sure to stay until the end for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture complete with cannons and fireworks. For more information, click here.

  • South Waterfront Day: On September 6, enjoy an afternoon of live music, ballet, theatre, art, kid-centric activities, dog-centric activities, a sailing regatta, walking tours, free bike tune-ups and more in the South Waterfront neighborhood. Participants include Bobby Torres, Devin Phillips Funk Band, Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Sojourn Theatre, Audubon Society of Portland, and many more. For more information, click here.

And there are many more events: a boat parade, dragon boat races, walking tours, paddle tours, a community fair, educational opportunities, a SOLV river clean-up …. Check the Riverfest website for all the details.

9/2: Free Admission Day at Portland Japanese Garden

Admission to the Portland Japanese Garden will be free on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The garden is located in Southwest Portland’s Washington Park and covers 5.5 acres. As a visitor, you get the chance to walk through five different types of Japanese gardens, see an authentic tea house, and take in an excellent view of downtown Portland and Mount Hood.

If you’re feeling ambitious, I also recommend visiting the nearby International Rose Test Garden on the same day. It’s one of my favorite free attractions.

If you can’t make it to the Japanese Garden on September 2, it looks like there will be another free admission day on November 10. Mark your calendar now. In fact, I recommend visiting on both days, if you can, to see how the garden changes with the seasons.

8/16 & 8/17: Used Bike Sale at Community Cycling Center

This weekend, August 16 and 17, Community Cycling Center in NE Portland is having a big sale on used bicycles. Prices start at $25.

From the Community Cycling Center website:

Stop by the Community Cycling Center and pick up a reasonably-priced grocery-getter, playa bike, or college cruiser.

Save big on pre-loved, commuter-style bicycles in need of a little tender loving care on Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th. The majority of these are 21-speed mountain bikes ready for a city commuter conversion.

DIY bicycles will be for sale starting from $25 and our friendly retail staff will help you determine the repairs that each bicycle will require to get “road ready.” Think of it as an everything-must-go yard sale staffed by extremely knowledgeable and helpful bike experts.

Don’t have time to DIY? We would be happy to fix your new-to-you bicycle – we can give you an estimate of labor and repair costs on the spot!

The DIY Oversupply Tent Sale will take place under the canopy behind the Community Cycling Center shop from 10am-7pm both days.
