Free Summer Fun: Theatrical Performances in Portland
July 8th, 2008
To me, watching a play is so exciting because I know that no other performance will be exactly like the one I’m watching. In July and August, Portland theatre groups will offer lots of opportunities to get that buzz for free:
Shakespeare in the Park by Portland Actors Ensemble: As I’ve mentioned, PAE will perform two plays in Portland’s parks: Julius Caesar each weekend until July 19, followed by The Two Gentlemen of Verona each weekend from July 26 to September 1.
Shakespeare in Woodlawn Park: Northwest Classical Theatre Company will perform Shakespeare’s Troilus & Cressida each weekend from July 19 to August 10.
JAW Playwrights Festival: With JAW, Portland Center Stage opens its developmental process to the public. The festival runs from July 8–20 and features readings of new plays, workshops for writers, and more.
Willy Wonka: This adaptation of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory will run from July 10–27 at Washington Park Amphitheatre.
Masque Alfresco: This theater group will treat the public to outdoor performances of Carlo Goldoni’s Servant of Two Masters and Moliere’s School for Wives in Beaverton, Lake Oswego and Hillsboro.
If you know of any other free summer plays, please write a comment about it.

Willy Wonka will have an adult cast in the evenings starting July 10th, but the children’s casts will be performing on weekends as follows:
Saturday at 10 am and 12 noon on July 19th and 26th.
Sunday at 12 noon on July 20th and 27th.
And I’d like to give a special plug for my own Veruca Salt, appearing in the Saturday 12 noon cast…!
