Free Events This Weekend in Portland: April 4–6

In addition to the events below, the Portland Farmers Market at Portland State University starts its 17th season on April 5. Free tea and carrot cake (check website for times), and educational presentation/information about plant care.

Saturday, April 5

  • Trillium Festival at Tryon Creek State Park: This event includes guided nature hikes, children’s crafts, live music performances, storytelling, photo contest, local authors and vendors, specials in the Nature Store, a raffle for fabulous prizes, and refreshments. Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. For more information, visit the Tryon Creek website

  • Bird Fest: At this family-friendly event, view and learn about domesticated birds from 25 local breeders. Birds on display include African Greys, Amazons, Bourkes, Budgies, Canaries, Cockatiels, Cockatoos, Conures, Finches, Lovebirds, Macaws, Pacific Parrolets, Parakeets, Quakers, Ringnecks and Senegals.   • Filmmaker Gus Van Sant, playwright/director Aaron Posner, and author Ken Babbs will discuss Ken Kesey’s legacy and its transformation on stage, screen and beyond. Portland Center Stage, Gerding Theater at the Armory, 2:00 pm.   • Silverhawk will perform at Music Millennium at 1:00 pm. Visit Music Millennium website for more information.  

  • China Forbes will perform at Music Millennium at 4:00 pm. Visit Music Millennium website for more information.   

  • Pilar French will perform at Edgefield at 7:00 pm. Ages 21 and over. For more information, visit the Edgefield website.

  • The Brothers Jam will perform at Rock Creek Tavern at 9:00 pm. All ages until 10:00 pm. For more information, visit the Rock Creek Tavern website.

  • Swing Papillon will perform at Press Club at 8:30 pm. Press Club is located at 2621 SE Clinton St., 503.233.5656.

Sunday, April 6

  • Jazz musicians Rebecca Kilgore and Lyle Ritz will perform at the Central Library at 2:00 pm. For more information, visit the Multnomah County Library website.

  • Mary Flower will perform at Edgefield at 5:00 pm. Ages 21 and older. For more information, visit the Edgefield website.

  • Authors Kristian Williams and Jules Boykoff will talk about their work at 2:00 pm at Hollywood Library. For more information, visit the Multnomah County Library website.

  • Author Sharon Wood Wortman will talk about her newest book, Walking Bridges Using Poetry as a Compass: Poems About Bridges Real and Imagined by 70 Poets, with Directions for Five Self-Guided Explorations. The reading will be followed by an optional walk to the Morrison Bridge (weather permitting). Central Library, 3:30 pm–4:30 pm. Visit the Multnomah County Library website for more information.

  • Authors Lou Rowan and Zachary Mason will talk about their books at 7:30 pm at Powell’s Books on Burnside. Rowan is the author of My Last Days; Mason’s book is The Lost Books of the Odyssey. For more information, visit the Powell’s website.

  • The movie Key Largo starring Humphrey Bogart will be playing at St. Johns Library at 2:00 pm. Free tickets for limited seating will be available 30 minutes prior to the program, at 1:30 pm. For more information, visit the Multnomah County Library website.

  • Citizen Kane will be showing at Press Club at 8:00 pm. Press Club is located at 2621 SE Clinton St., 503.233.5656.     

  • Historian and author William G. Robbins, poet-artist Elizabeth Woody, and nature essayist/poet David Oates will talk about sustainability, forestry, and other notions of regionalism and the “Oregon character.” Portland Center Stage, Gerding Theater at the Armory, Noon.
