Free Events This Weekend in Portland: Nov 16–18

Friday, November 16

  • Literary Arts is hosting a party to honor this year’s Oregon Book Awards finalists. Finalists in the poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction categories will read brief selections from their work. Complimentary wine and refreshments will be served, and books will be available for purchase. 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel.   • El Carnaval del Caribe is happening at Matt Dishman Community Center. There’ll be live Cuban music by Caña Son, salsa lessons, face painting, carnival games, and free family swim. 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Admission is technically not free…it’ll cost you two cans of food per person. Game tickets are four for $1. Food from Cuban restaurant Pambiche will be available for purchase.

  • Kate Mann will be performing at Edgefield at 7:00 pm. Ages 21 and older. For more information, visit the Edgefield website.

  • Guy Tyler Band will be performing at Rock Creek Tavern at 9:00 pm. All ages until 10:00 pm. For more information, visit the Rock Creek Tavern website.

  • Clive Cussler will be talking about his book The Chase at 7:00 pm at Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills Crossing. For more information, visit the Powell’s website.

  • Norman Solomon will present his book Made Love, Got War at 7:30 pm at Powell’s City of Books on Burnside. For more information, visit the Powell’s website.

Saturday, November 17

  • The Multnomah County Library is hosting its annual Tapestry of Tales Storytelling Festival. Starting at 11:00 am, authors will be sharing their stories at various Portland libraries. The festival will culminate with the “Tapestry of Tales Tellabration and Finale” at the First Unitarian Church. Details below.

    Come celebrate a world of stories with Carol Russell, Andy Offutt Irwin, and Beth Horner. This performance will have sign language interpreters. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

  • Experience Philippine music, dance, displays, and food at “A Taste of the Philippines,” a cultural event hosted by the Tualatin Historical Society and The Philippine Nurses Association of Oregon & Washington. The festival will take place at the Tualatin Heritage Center from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. An authentic island lunch will also be served from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm in the community room at the Tualatin Police Department (reservations needed). For more information, click here.
  • The Fix-It Fair, presented by The City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development, will be taking place at SEI from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. The fair features workshops and resources focused on health and nutrition, home repairs, gardening, and money-saving tips. For more information, click here.

  • Jimmy Bivens will be performing at Edgefield at 7:00 pm. Ages 21 and older. For more information, visit the Edgefield website.

  • The Brothers Jam will be performing at Rock Creek Tavern at 9:00 pm. All ages until 10:00 pm. For more information, visit the Rock Creek Tavern website.

Sunday, November 18

  • It’s the Hotel deLuxe’s Sunday Movie Night. Inside Iraq: The Untold Stories will be playing. The Screening Room, located off the hotel lobby, opens at 6:00 pm, the movie begins at 6:30 pm. RSVP to 503.219.2093. For more information, visit the Hotel deLuxe’s website.
