Friday, November 9

  • The big Christmas tree is coming! At noon, the City’s 75-foot tree, gifted by Stimson Lumber Company, will arrive at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Santa will be there too. For more information, visit the Pioneer Courthouse Square website.

  • Jackpot Records and the Crystal Ballroom invite fans of The Flaming Lips to experience “Zaireeka,”on the album’s 10th anniversary, as they’ve never heard and experienced it before: bigger, louder, sweeter and stranger, with Lips leader Wayne Coyne on screen to give listeners a guided tour through the work. 8:00 pm doors, 9:00 pm show.   • Maldon Meehan and the Footnotes (traditional Irish music and dance) will be performing at the Tigard Library from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. For more information, visit the Tigard Library website.

  • Mark Ransom will be performing at Edgefield at 7:00 pm. Ages 21 and older. For more information, visit the Edgefield website.

  • Paula Wenzel Band will be performing at Rock Creek Tavern at 9:00 pm. All ages until 10:00 pm. For more information, visit the Rock Creek Tavern website.

  • Historian Daniel Walker Howe will talk about his book What Hath God Wrought at Powell’s City of Books on Burnside at 7:30 pm. For more information, visit the Powell’s website.

Saturday, November 10

  • Vancouver is hosting its 21st Annual Veterans Day Parade. The parade will begin at 11:00 am with the firing of the Howitzer cannons on the Parade Ground at the Historic Reserve. The parade starts at the corner of East Reserve Street and Officers Row and then proceeds west toward the downtown core and ends at Esther Short Park. The parade will take place rain or shine. For more information, visit the City of Vancouver website.

  • Subatomic Books is celebrating the publication of Steve Libbey’s book The Bloodbaths at Work/Sound at 8:00 pm. There will be music by funk band The Golden Greats and DJ sets by DJ Norto and DJ Miss Spent-Youth (the cover girl for the book), special customized “Bloodbath” beer, and food. And you’ll be able to buy the book at a discount and signed by the author. For more information, visit the Subatomic Books website.

  • Critically-acclaimed, award-winning concert pianist Eldred Marshall will perform “Hammerklavier” at 8:00 pm at the Portland Community Music Center, located at 3350 SE Francis Street. This is part of Marshall’s 8-concert series in which he’ll attempt to play the entire series of piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven from memory. The recitals will take place throughout September, October, November and December of 2007. The events are free, but donations are welcomed and encouraged. For more information, click here.

  • American Indian Storyteller Ed Edmo will be speaking at the North Portland Library from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm. Ed Edmo learned the art of storytelling from his father, who told him Indian legends. Many of them were based on the geography, history, and culture of the area around the Celilo Falls where he grew up. Space is limited. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.   • Lincoln Crockett will be performing at Edgefield at 7:00 pm. Ages 21 and older. For more information, visit the Edgefield website.

  • SLA will be performing at Rock Creek Tavern at 9:00 pm. All ages until 10:00 pm. For more information, visit the Rock Creek Tavern website.

  • Union Rose and Stubby Pencil Studio are hosting a kids card-making event. From 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, kids can color a card for themselves, and create another for the Portland VA Medical Center, in honor of Veterans Day. For more information, visit the Union Rose website. Sunday, November 11

  • Kennedy School is hosting the Yoga Calm for Children book launch celebration. The party will include a Yoga Calm kids demonstration, author readings, a multimedia show, and a rare performance by international World Music artists Benjy & Heather Wertheimer. 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. All ages welcome; kids with adults only.   • Muse Art + Design is celebrating its third anniversary with a holiday card-making event. From noon to 5:00 pm, a variety of supplies will be provided for you to make your own unique greeting card to share your creativity and holiday cheer with a friend, family member, or loved one.   • The Church of Craft is meeting at the Central Library at 12:30 pm.   • In honor of Veteran’s Day, the World Forestry Center’s Discovery Museum is offering free admission to all active and retired military personnel. For more information, visit the World Forestry Center website.

  • Imago Theatre will be hosting the US live stage premiere of The Fall 01 at 8:00 pm. Any veteran of any military service from anywhere in the world will be admitted free of charge. All other ticketing starts at $10. For more information, visit The Fall 01 website.
