I went to a book launch party for the first time last night. The revelry took place at 23 Sandy, a small gallery in NE Portland. The star of the show was a book called You Have Time For This: Contemporary American Short-Short Stories published by Portland State University’s Ooligan Press.
I’ve been to book readings in the past, which I realized are quite different from book parties. At a book reading, you sit down, and the author reads a little of the book and answers audience questions. Then you leave, or you line up to get your book signed. I’ve been to a number of readings (from indie poets to Chuck Palahniuk), and they were orderly and low-key.
In contrast, a book party is a book reading with (as the name suggests) more of a party atmosphere. I got to 23 Sandy at the party’s start time, 7:00 pm, and the place was already crowded. By 8:00 pm when the readings were scheduled to begin, the windows were fogged up, and the noise level was at shouting. I’m not sure what the capacity of the space was, but I’m sure we maxed it. There were no chairs, but there were snacks and alcohol, which I’ve never seen at a book reading.
The readings were lovely (the authors of the book couldn’t make the party, so Ooligan had winners of its flash fiction contest read). And it was a lot of fun to be able to socialize with classmates outside of class. (If you don’t already know, I’m a part-time master’s student.)
If you love books, rubbing elbows with authors, and chatting with other book lovers, I would recommend checking out a book launch party. The Ooligan party was free, and I’ll be sure to post other free ones in my weekend round-ups. You can also find out about book events (both readings and parties) by checking the websites of publishers, bookstores and literary organizations.
Happy Thanksgiving, all! Here’s this week’s summary of free events. Admission is free for all of the events listed here. Have a great weekend!

The fine people at PDXSwap.com are hosting a gift swap on December 1. If you’d like to curb your holiday spending, as well as purge your drawers of giftable items that don’t suit your needs, this event may be for you.
The swap is for nice, working items that would make great gifts (such as like-new-condition toys, pretty candles that have never been burned, the George Foreman grill that’s still in the box because you’re a vegetarian, etc.).
Details in a nutshell:
What: December Gift Swap
When: Saturday, December 1, 2:00 pm (get there by at least 1:45 pm to set up your stuff)
Who: Women, men and teens are invited, but small children will need to stay at home because all of the items will be on the floor.
Where: Presbyterian Church of Laurelhurst (in the gym), 935 NE 33rd Avenue, Portland, OR 97232, 503-232-9129
Directions: two blocks south of Sandy Blvd on 33rd, at Pacific Street, in a small modern red brick building. There is a large parking lot behind the church. Enter through the door closest the play structure. There will be signs. RSVP to small@pdxswap.com
What to bring: clean and working giftable items. No trash or broken/dirty/greasy/gross stuff. This is a volunteer event and no money is being made, so there will be no dumpsters or other way to dispose of trash. In order to make this fair for everyone, make sure each item can fit in the backseat of a car or in a trunk. (In other words, you will need to leave your unused, unwanted luxury yacht at home, sorry.) Also be sure to bring bags and boxes to carry home your newfound gifts and stocking stuffers. Lastly, the gym is unheated, so dress for warmth.
What to expect at the swap: When you get there, you’ll lay your items on the floor by category—toys with toys, books with books, etc. At the start of the swap, everyone will get 15 minutes to find 10 items. After that, people will be able to rummage through the remaining items as much as they please, being sure not to venture into piles of things that others have already claimed.
Depending on the quantity and quality of items people bring in, this could be a way to settle your shopping list a whole 24 days before Christmas…without spending any money. Am I being too optimistic?
For more information and to RSVP for this event, email small@pdxswap.com.
Admission is free for all of the events listed here. Have a great weekend!

WORKSHOP: SELLING OUT
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2:30 PM WHITSELL AUDITORIUM
Making your way as an artist has always been a dodgy proposition. If you’re any good, temptations arise to coax you down the devil’s path to commercial projects and that huge cancer to important groundbreaking art, fed and fattened artists. How does the Northwest filmmaker balance dedication to the art with the passion for bigger projects and a little financial comfort? In this sea of filmmaking fellowship, why do some filmmakers continue to ditch the Northwest for bigger markets? In the age of telecommuting, is that really necessary any more? Join us for a frank discussion-moderated by Warren Etheredge-with several Northwest filmmakers experiencing various degrees of temptation. Learn from their stories how you too can sell out- maybe you can even do it without compromising.
FREE ADMISSION
WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 4:00PM WHITSELL AUDITORIUM
HOSTED BY WARREN ETHEREDGE So worked your ass off and bled a little but your film isn’t exactly burning up the festival circuit. Is it you? Is it them? Is it something that might be easily fixed? You may have had plenty of unsolicited advice to go along with the rejection letters, but how about some straightforward advice from a pro? Today, we’ve invited Seattle film guru Warren Etheredge back to the Festival to take a look at the first five minutes or so of brave filmmakers’ films and offer his (brutally honest) insight, delivered, with his trademark wit and good will. If you are interested in baring your cinematic soul, sign up by contacting thomas@nwfilm.org. First come, first served as time allows In addition to curating, organizing and hosting all events for The Warren Report, Warren Etheredge is the President and Head of Development for LOCKSPRING PICTURES, served as the Curator for the 1 Reel Film Festival at Seattle’s Bumbershoot and is one of the founding faculty of The Film School in Seattle.
Following the workshop, stay for a special screening of Etheredge’s television show, The Warren Report. In the episode, titled DO ME, Warren talks about the titillating and controversial subject of sexual addiction with witty alleged experts like Dan Savage, filmmaker Caveh Zahedi, and Dr. Pepper Schwartz We should mention the obvious, that this show contains frank talk about adult situations.
